1963 – Three-time Oscar nominee
Johnny Depp was born on this day in Owensboro, Kentucky. At an early age, it was apparent that Depp was cut out for stardom; two weeks after dropping out of the 11th grade to become a guitar player, Depp tried to return to school, but his principal suggested he might make a better rock star than a student. With his band The Kids, Depp experienced some initial success as a rocker, landing opening gigs for The Talking Heads, Iggy Pop, and the Ramones. But after the band moved to Los Angeles and started experiencing hard times, Depp’s wife introduced him to her ex-boyfriend, Nicolas Cage, who urged Depp to get into acting and made some introductions. A short time later, Depp landed his first role, as one of Freddy Krueger’s victims in “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984).
