1990 – Kevin Costner’s “
Dances with Wolves” premiered on this day in Washington D.C. For his debut directorial effort, Costner had to fund much of the picture himself, since investors were weary due to the unpopularity of westerns at the time, Costner’s insistence on a nearly three-hour run time, and his plans to use a large dose of subtitles. Costner’s bet paid off though, as the film won seven Academy Awards, including Costner’s only Oscars, for directing and producing.
