The biggest Oscar upsets
Shakespeare in Love
“Shakespeare in Love” beats “Saving Private Ryan” – A possibly prophetic example of a Spielberg film coming into awards season as a Best Picture favourite only to be dethroned by an underdog (we’re looking at you “Lincoln” and “Argo”). If there’s one thing the Academy loves more than a gut-wrenching, soul-crushing war movie like the Second World War drama “Saving Private Ryan,” it’s a frilly, thesp-filled costume drama like “Shakespeare in Love.” Not only did the verse-filled drama about the behind-the-scenes life of William Shakespeare take home Best Picture Oscar, but star Gwyneth Paltrow also upset assumed frontrunner Cate Blanchett (“Elizabeth”) by clinching the Best Actress trophy. A surprise to be sure, plus it’s hard to imagine that anyone would consider Paltrow a superior actress to Blanchet these days.
