Movies you didn't know were sequels
"Sahara" — Based on the Clive Cussler novel of the same name, this 2005 action flop starred Matthew McConaughey as globetrotting adventurer Dirk Pitt. "Sahara" sees Pitt hunting for a lost Confederate ship in West Africa, but the famous fictional explorer once sought out an even greater maritime prize in another film: the legendary Titanic. Too bad Dirk Pitt isn't as good at selling movie tickets as he is at finding sunken ships! The 1980 film "Raise the Titanic" — in which actor Richard Jordan played Pitt — was an unprecedented box office flop. Shot on a budget of $40 million (a huge budget at the time), the film only sold $7 million worth of tickets. Although no mention the events of "Raise the Titanic" is made in "Sahara," newspaper clippings seen in the film's opening credits detail many of Pitt's past exploits, including his efforts to raise the ill-fated ship from the North Atlantic.
