Well, Osca-teers, with half the year in the rearview mirror, let's take a quick look to see whether there are any films that are Oscar contenders. I waited until I saw "The Dark Knight Rises" to see if we had a popcorn tent-pole film that would be a game-changer for the 85th Oscars. Well, not so much. I also restricted the movies to those that Americans could see in theaters, rather than those that showed at Cannes and Sundance and will roll out over the course of the year. This gives readers the chance to tell me what their favorites are and to start setting the field, rather than feeling that if they didn't take a week off work to go to a festival, they didn't stand a chance at picking the Oscars.
OK, bottom line: Like in most years, the Oscar season is back-loaded, and the first six months looks pretty thin. But remember: Last year, best picture winner "The Artist" didn't play domestically until deep into the fall season, and "The Help" came with the August heat.
