The showgirl flamboyance, though, was an in-your-face gesture to the academy after she was egregiously snubbed for her performance in "Mask." She had been told, "the academy doesn't think you're serious, [when] you don't dress seriously," so what other recourse did the singer-actress have except to supersize burlesque?
