In the wake of their new deal, Marvel and Sony are moving quickly on relaunching the Spider-Man franchise. Drew Goddard is in talks to direct and write the upcoming film.

Goddard had previously been tapped to helm Sony’s planned Spider-Man spin-off film, Sinister Six, but it looks like Sony’s plans for the web-slinging franchise have been put on the backburner as the studio focuses on relaunching the troubled franchise.

Sony had no comment.

As was previously announced, Sony Pictures, which has been the steward of the franchise since 1999, is partnering upwith Disney-owned Marvel Studios to bring a new version of the Spider-Man character to life. As part of the revamp, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film.

The new Spider-Man film will start a new series, and will not be tied to the Andrew Garfield-starring The Amazing Spider-Man. The studio is looking for a new lead actor, and will likely set the story in high school. The currently untitled film is set for release on July 28, 2017.

Latino-Review first broke the Goddard news.

Goddard wrote and made his directorial debut with the 2012 horror film The Cabin in the Woods, and writes and executive produces Netflix’s Daredevil. He also was one of the saviors of World War Z after that movie ran into third act trouble. He’s repped UTA.
