'Spider-Man' Helmer Marc Webb & Chef Suzanne Goin Join Forces for Earth Day

In celebration of Earth Day April 22, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ director Marc Webb and Chef Suzanne Goin teamed up to host a Be Amazing event at Larchmont Charter School in West Hollywood.

At the event, kids from the Anderson Munger Family YMCA — all donning Spider-Man costumes — participated in gardening activities as well as cooking interactions with Goin to learn about sustainability and the benefits of eating healthy.  In addition, Spider-Man read to the kids, discussing the importance of recycling and taking care of the environment and passing along the message that kids are just as powerful as superheroes when it comes to taking care of the planet.

When kids asked him if he could climb the school building he replied that OSHA regulations prohibited him from doing that on school property. Students then requested that Spidey demonstrate the use of the webs that eject from his wrists. He replied that it makes a really big mess and he had promised the school principal that he would not destroy the classroom he was allowed to use.

Webb, who was impressed that the school actually grows a portion of the food that the students eat, watched as Goin helped kids create a mango smoothie and avocado dip for fresh veggies. Goin said she feels very lucky that her three kids attend Larchmont Charter in part because of the garden and fresh meals that are cooked for school lunch each day on the campus.

The Larchmont Charter School at Fairfax’s lunch program was created as part of Goin’s Lunch Matters initiative which is also an affiliate of Alice Waters’ Edible Schoolyard Project.

The event was part of an 11-city Be Amazing service project that is bringing communities together in the spirit of volunteering throughout April. Events around the country include everything from neighborhood clean ups in Atlanta to flower planting in Dallas and Washington D.C.

The movie opens domestically May 2.
