MADRID -- The Spanish government has fined Spanish television broadcasters $4.3 million (€3.3 million) for a range of regulatory infractions in 2012, with the lion's share coming from excessive advertising.
While the number of infractions (29) dropped from the previous year (40), the fine rose from $2.75 million (€2.1 million) in 2011. More than $2.2 million (€1.7) of the total -- and 17 of the complaints filed against the broadcasters -- were due to too many commercials, according to the report released by the Industry Ministry that oversees the sector.
The report did not specify which broadcasters were fined.
Spanish broadcasters continued a decline in inappropriate programming and broadcast practices. Indeed, the 2012 figure is a far cry from the €9.5 million fine based on 505 infractions in 2007 -- the highest figure in the past decade.
The Spanish ad market earned $1 billion (€828.7 million) in the first quarter of 2013, a 16.6 percent drop when compared with the first quarter of 2012. That figure is on top of the 18.9 percent year-end fall in advertising in the Spanish market for 2012, according to a report just out from InfoAdex. Experts predict the ad market will fall 6.3 percent for year-end figures in 2013 and won't level off until May 2014.
