Sony’s Animated Spider-Man Movie Shifts Release Date To December 2018

UPDATE with release date change: The release date for Sony’s animated Spider-Man movie being directed by The Lego Movie‘s Phil Lord and Christopher Miller has been shifted from July 20, 2018 to December 21, 2018. The push comes after the studio earlier this year unveiled its Spider-Man reboot plan with Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal steering the ship of its $4 billion live-action franchise.

Under that deal, Spider-Man will appear in his Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War that is part of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, and then Sony Pictures will release the next stand-alone installment on July 28, 2017, with Jon Watts directing and Tom Holland as the young Peter Parker.

PREVIOUS, APRIL 22 PM: Tom Rothman came out swinging at CinemaCon. He announced in Vegas that Lego Movie helmers Phil Lord & Christopher Miller will make an animated feature of Spider-Man. They’ll conceive with an eye to direct it. We knew that the animated film was in the works, and that Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua planned to do a sequel to their 2014 film The Equalizer. Rothman formalized that, too. It doesn’t impede the progress of a new line of Spidey live-action films in the works, these with Marvel chief Kevin Feige in a producing capacity. The animated film will be released July 20, 2018. The live-action sequel will be released July 28, 2017.
