Sony-Marvel Studios’ ‘Spider-Man’ Will Swing Into Imax Venues

After that whirlwind of release-date changes last week, it put Sony/Marvel StudiosSpider-Man in the pole position to play at Imax theaters when it opens on July 7, 2017. Sony’s Josh Greenstein, president of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution at Sony Pictures, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, and Greg Foster, Senior EVP of Imax Corp and CEO of Imax Entertainment, made the announcement today. Tom Holland stars as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and Jon Watts is directing. Feige and Amy Pascal are producing the project.

This Spider-Man will be digitally re-mastered into the Imax 3D format.

Sony’s Spider-Man franchise counts $4B in global B.O. across five films. The first, 2002’s Spider-Man, was shown in Imax. Originally, Spider-Man was to debut on July 28, 2017, but when Star Wars: Episode VIII was moved out of its Memorial Day weekend frame to its pre-Christmas 2017 weekend, pulling Pirates 5 off of July 7, Spidey took over the new summer date. Sony’s reboot of Jumanji jumped from December 25, 2017 to Spidey’s late-July date.
