Break Dancing Proves Universal Language in 'Shake the Dust' Trailer (Exclusive)

Break dancing’s heyday in Hollywood may have passed long ago — after films like Breakin’ (and its unfairly infamous sequel Electric Boogaloo), Beat Street, and Flashdance — but it’s still an essential element of hip-hop culture (literally). And it may just be hitting its stride in certain corners of the globe.

As seen in the above exclusive trailer, the new documentary Shake the Dust, produced by platinum-selling rap star Nasir Jones (aka Nas), shows how the art form has found new devotees in downtrodden areas of such countries as Uganda, Cambodia, Yemen, and Colombia.

“We speaks many languages around the world, but for me, the language of the heart is hip-hop,” says one of the film’s subjects, while another points out that b-boying saved him from a life of crime.

Nas, along with Talib Kweli, Common, and Vince Staples, lay down the soundtrack for this unabashedly inspirational doc, directed by Adam Sjöberg.

You can watch Shake the Dust now as a 30-day exclusive on Vimeo on Demand via ShaketheDust.org before it opens in theaters on May 15.
