CANNES – German independent distributor Senator Entertainment is expanding into Switzerland, signing an agreement with local distributor Praesens-Film to jointly bow titles theatrically as well as on home entertainment and via Video-on-Demand in the territory.
Senator is coming off a record year, driven by the blockbuster success of French comedy The Intouchables, which grossed more than $80 million at the German box office for the Berlin-based distributor. Senator has plowed that cash back into expansion, upping its acquisitions and productions and now expanding its distribution business beyond the German and Austrian markets.
Senator and Praesens will kick off their cooperation this summer with the Michael Caine-starrer Mr. Morgan's Last Love from director Sandra Nettelbeck (Mostly Martha). Other titles set to go out under the new Senator Film Verleih Schweiz label include the Irish drama Run & Jump from director Steph Green -- which premiered in Tribeca last month -- and literary adaptation The Cook, based on the bestseller by Swiss writer Martin Suter, and which Senator is co-producing together with Swiss shingle C-Films and Germany's Network Movies, set for a 2014 release.
“Switzerland is a particularly exciting and important market for the kind of films we tend to distribute and offers us a huge opportunity for organic growth,” said Senator Entertainment CEO Helge Sasse.
