The historic 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs has inspired documentaries and movies before. For one example, see When Billie Beat Bobby, which starred Holly Hunter and Ron Silver and aired on ABC in 2001.

But the upcoming Fox Searchlight film Battle of the Sexes marks the first time that the showdown between the two tennis champs will be made into a theatrical film. Today, King herself provided an early look at its two stars, Emma Stone and Steve Carell, in character, complete with ludicrously large ‘70s glasses.

Battle of the Sexes is being directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who previously worked with Carell on Little Miss Sunshine and also directed Ruby Sparks. Carell and Stone also co-starred together as father and daughter in Crazy Stupid Love. Before you ask about their age difference, keep in mind that Riggs was retired and 55 when he brashly claimed he could beat any woman, including 29-year-old King, on the court.

I think we all know how that went. (Spoiler alert for all you young ‘uns out there: King won in straight sets.) But nevertheless, it should be fun to watch it play out again on the big screen. Battle of the Sexes is due out next year.
