Satanic Temple Teams Up With 'The Witch' to Promote New Horror Flick

The Satanic Temple has teamed up with A24’s new horror flick, The Witch. In a press release for the collaboration, the Temple praises the film’s “departure from the victim narrative” of witchcraft, and its “declaration of feminine independence.” The joint venture has set up a promotional website which serves as a call to action issues platform for the temple’s pet causes: reproductive rights, political engagement, abuse support, and of course, black cat rescue.

Now, if you’re wondering why a movie studio teamed up with the Dark Prince, it might help to know the Satanic Temple isn’t really a religious organization in the traditional sense. It’s more of a political activist group that uses Satanic imagery to call media attention to its causes. And as for A24’s involvement, horror distributors have a long tradition of using unusual promotional tactics to generate attention for what are often low-budget campaigns.

The Witch garnered a lot of Sundance buzz last year, holding a healthy 88% Rotten Tomatoes score. The movie comes out February 19. So what do you think about The Satanic Temple backing a film? Let us know on Facebook and in the comments below.
