Satan Weighs in on the 'Left Behind' Movie

Left Behind has earned one hell of an endorsement. Instead of using a quote from a film critic in its new ad, the Nicolas Cage film boasts a sound bite from the devil himself. The promo, posted to Facebook on Sunday, shows a frantic crowd shot from the Bible-based thriller, along with the words “‘Please do not bring unbelievers to this movie’ —Satan.” (Didn’t anyone ever tell Satan that if he can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all?)

The tongue-in-cheek quote draws attention to the Christian message of Left Behind, which imagines events from the Book of Revelation occurring in the present day and is based on the bestselling 1995 novel. The image may also reflect the sense of humor of the film’s director, Vic Armstrong. Speaking to Yahoo Movies this summer, Armstrong admitted that he didn’t notice the Biblical content of Left Behind when he first read the script. “[My agent] David Gersh said, ‘Well, what about the religious aspect?’ And I said, ‘What religious aspect?’” the director said. “He said, ‘Didn’t you find it strange when people disappeared on the plane and everything?’ I said, ‘David, I did Starship Troopers, and I didn’t question it when great big bugs came climbing over the hill and ripped people’s heads off. That’s the world I live in!’”

Other online ads for the movie feature endorsements from prominent evangelical Christians, including Duck Dynasty’s Willie Robertson, inspirational speaker Tim Storey, and Jerry B. Jenkins, who co-wrote the novel Left Behind with Tim LaHaye. The film, which stars Nicolas Cage, Cassi Thomson, Chad Michael Murray, and Lea Thompson, opens in theaters on Oct. 3.
