Ziyi Zhang’s ‘My Lucky Star’ Set For North American Release (EXCLUSIVE)
China Lion has acquired North American rights to Ziyi Zhang’s “My Lucky Star” and will release the Chinese-language comedy Sept. 20 in North America day-and-date with Mainland China.
The film, directed by American helmer Dennie Gordon, stars Zhang and Chinese singer Wang Leehom in a project with a similar story line to “Sophie’s Revenge.” Producers are Ming ‘Beaver’ Kwei, Second Chan, William Cheng, Ling Lucas and Zhang.
The film is set for a limited release in the U.S. and Canada in metro areas, including Boston, Chicago, Honolulu, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver and the Washington, D.C., area.
Zhang stars as a women caught up in an international diamond heist that draws her towards a spy (played by Wang) trying to save the world. Producers said last year that Gordon was the first American woman to direct a feature film for the domestic market in China.
Three-year-old China Lion is headquartered in Los Angeles and has released a number of titles through the Asia-Pacific region including “Tiny Times,” “Tiny Times 2″ and “So Young.”
Zhang’s credits include “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “House of Flying Daggers,” “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “The Grandmaster” from Wong Kar-Wai.
Wang starred in Ang Lee’s “Lust, Caution.” He’s currently starring in Michael Mann’s untitled cyber-thriller with Chris Hemsworth and is signed to play the title role in Magic Storm Entertainment’s “Annihilator.”
Zhang is repped by ICM Partners, Mosaic and manager Ling Lucas. Wang is represented by CAA, Untitled Entertainment and Universal Network East West.
