Zack Snyder Defends Man Of Steel's High Death Count

At the end of Superman reboot ‘Man Of Steel’ a titanic battle between Supes and General Zod levels most of Metropolis. Director Zack Snyder believes the death count was around 5000, but a more scientific analysis estimates it was more like 130,000.

The level of destruction caused some controversy as the film was kind of blasé about the amount of people who died, after all, Superman and Lois Lane do start making out in the middle of the destroyed city.

Snyder has addressed the controversy once more as part of Entertainment Weekly’s coverage of ‘Man of Steel’s sequel ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’.

“I was surprised because that’s the thesis of Superman for me,” he said. “That you can’t just have superheroes knock around and have there be no consequences.“

The problem however has always been the handling of those consequences on film, rather than the fact those consequences existed in the first place.

“There are other superhero movies where they joke about how basically no one’s getting hurt,” he added, possibly referencing ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, in which the heroes make a concerted effort to save people at any opportunity.

“That’s not us. What is that message? That’s it’s okay that there’s this massive destruction with zero consequence for anyone?”

Well no, it’s not. Ben Affleck, who will be playing Batman in next year’s sequel, which will apparently deal with the fallout of Zod and Superman’s catastrophic tussle.

“One of the things I liked was Zack’s idea of showing accountability and the consequences of violence and seeing that there are real people in those buildings,” he said, “In fact, one of those buildings was Bruce Wayne’s building so he knew people who died in that Black Zero event.”

Interestingly that’s the first time we’ve heard it referred to as Black Zero, which may be how it is also referred to as in ‘Dawn of Justice’.

‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ will be released on 25 March 2016.
