Women’s World Cup Ratings Score For Fox, ‘Zoo’ Debuts OK, ‘America’s Got Talent’ Steady

Victorious Americans, murderous animals and some Heavenly Joy were on the primetime plate last night and their courses certainly varied. First of all, it was a record night for Fox and the Women’s World Cup as the USA thrashed top-ranked Germany 2-0 to move on to Sunday’s final. Early numbers have the match from Montreal getting 3.3/13 rating and pulling in 9.04 million viewers between 8-9 PM. The top-rated show of the night, the USA-Germany game was up 70% in the key demo from the Americans’ victory over China that Fox showed in primetime on June 26.

Last night’s semifinal match actually started at 7 PM ET so, as is common with such sporting events, expect significant adjustments in those numbers later today. As it is, Fox won the night in the demo with a 2.2/8 rating while NBC took the viewership top spot with 8.82 million tuning in.

Team USA’s success has had nothing but a winning effect on Fox. The net’s broadcasting of the Canadian-based tournament has seen a more than 40% ratings climb over the 2011 Women’s World Cup and a more than 23% rise since this year’s tournament — a lot of that having to do with the American team, which delivers strong numbers to Fox every time it wins. All of which is to say, expect a new record when America meets either England or Japan (depending on who wins that game today), on Sunday. Following the Women’s World Cup game, Fox aired the special Beat The Champions (1.1/4).

Records were not on the menu over at CBS last night with the debut of Zoo (1.2/4). Avoiding the soccer as strong competition but not veteran unscripted offerings on NBC and ABC, the summer series adaptation of James Patterson’s 2012 bestseller didn’t make much of a bite. Though its viewership of 8.07 million made Zoo the third most watched show of the night, it was down 25% from the Wednesday 9 PM debut of Extant last July 9. That debut had a new Big Brother as a lead-in unlike the NCIS encore Zoo was given. Compared to the blockbuster launch of Under The Dome on June 24, 2013, Zoo was down 64% among 18-49s. Closer to home calenderwise, Zoo stumbled 20% behind the June 1 premiere this year of fellow adapted drama The Whispers on ABC.

That Heavenly Joy we mentioned earlier was the 5-year-old singer whose version of “In Summer” from Frozen blew everyone away on America’s Got Talent (2.4/9) on Tuesday. The most watched (10.60 million) show of the competitive night and second best rated, AGT slipped 8% among adults 18-49 from last week. The finale of its freshman lead-out I Can Do That! (1.5/5) went in the other direction with a 7% rise from its June 23 show.

ABC’s only original of the night was Extreme Weight Loss (0.7/2), which was even with last week.
