Prison Break actor Wentworth Miller came out on Wednesday, Aug. 21, as a gay man while rejecting an invitation to attend the St. Petersburg International Film Festival.

According to Glaad's website, Miller, 41, sent a letter to festival director Maria Averbakh, saying, "Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes. However, as a gay man, I must decline."

This follows Russian president Vladimir Putin's decision to pass a law prohibiting adoption of Russian-born children to national and international same-sex couples.

"I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government," Miller continued in the letter. "The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly."

Miller is best known for his role in the FOX show Prison Break, which aired from 2005-2009.
