Watch: Michael B. Jordan’s ‘Creed’ First Trailer Gives ‘Rocky’ Franchise New Life

The first trailer for “Creed,” the seventh Rocky Balboa film, has hit the Web, but this time, it’s Michael B. Jordan who dons the boxing gloves.

“Fantastic Four” star Jordan plays the son of Balboa’s arch nemesis-turned-friend Apollo Creed, who was played by Carl Weathers in the first four “Rocky” films. Balboa himself, Sylvester Stallone, even appears in the trailer as the iconic athlete, becoming a mentor for Jordan’s character, Adonis — much like Burgess Meredith’s Mickey served as a mentor to Balboa.

There’s plenty of callbacks to previous films in the franchise, including Jordan running around Philadelphia in a black beanie and grey sweats. Adonis Creed reveals he never met his father, who died in “Rocky IV,” but he does don patriotic trunks in the ring, just like Weathers’ character did.

“Dear White People” star Tessa Thompson co-stars as Creed’s love interest, and can be seen briefly in the trailer. Phylicia Rashad plays Mary Anne Creed, originally played by Lavelle Roby and later by Sylvia Meals.

“Creed” is the first film in the Rocky franchise since 2006’s “Rocky Balboa.” Ryan Coogler, who previously helmed Jordan’s critically acclaimed turn in indie “Fruitvale Station,” directs.

“Creed” will box its way into theaters Nov. 25.
