Watch: Vice’s ‘The Real’ Explores ‘The X-Files’ in Season 2 Premiere

The truth is out there.

Vice’s digital series “The Real” returns for a second season today. The premiere episode focuses on the real-life inspiration for “The X-Files.” New host Casey Feldman travels to Roswell, N.M. with Joe Nickell, a longtime paranormal investigator and skeptic who’s been dubbed the real-life Dana Scully (the character played by Gillian Anderson on the “The X-Files”).

The episode also meets actor William B. Davis, the man behind The X-Files’s infamous antagonist, The Smoking Man, who explains his character’s motivations and why fandom around the series has endured for decades.

“The Real” has investigated the stories behind such TV shows as “Mad Men,” “True Detective,” “True Blood,” “Weeds” and “Eastbound & Down,” and Leonardo DiCaprio’s film “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Upcoming episodes from the sophomore season will examine the inspirations behind “Better Call Saul” and “Silicon Valley.”

The Webby Award-winning series launched last year as a spinoff to the Vice documentary “The Real Walter White” (the protagonist in “Breaking Bad”).
