Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch Honored at Hamptons Film Festival

Variety‘s 10 Actors to Watch class of 2013 were honored at the Hamptons International Film Festival Oct. 12 at a panel discussion which included four of the emerging thesps, Brie Larson (“Short Term 12,” “The Spectacular Now,”) Dane DeHaan (“Kill Your Darlings,” “The Place Beyond The Pines,”), David Oyelowo (“The Butler”) and Scott Haze (“Child of God.”)

In a wide-ranging discussion with Variety executive editor Steven Gaydos, the actors discussed everything from their training and early acting experiences, which included Oyelowo’s time at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art to Larson’s role when she was seven in “a fake commercial called ‘Malibu Mudslide Barbie,’” which Larson said was “vindication” after several rejections. “I acted the shit out that thing.”

Having acted in four films with James Franco as director, Haze tried to explain what drives the mutli-hyphenate Franco to take on so many challenges. “When you have accessibility to so many things, you say, ‘Why not go to Yale?’ Why not do ‘The Interview’ with Seth Rogen? Why not start teaching?’ I don’t think any of us are interested in being careful.”
