USA Network’s ‘Mr. Robot’ Pilot Set For Digital, VOD Rollout
USA Network is expanding on its windowing rollout strategy with new hacker drama Mr. Robot. The pilot episode will be available for streaming beginning May 27 ahead of its linear debut on June 24 on at least 19 English and Hispanic digital, VOD and TVE platforms, including Xfinity, USA,, iTunes, Amazon, telemundo.com and Latina.com, the network said today. It also will be available on 22 sites within the Crave online network through June 5. Additional partners, including editorial outlets are still in development.
“It is more important than ever to push boundaries in order to break through the clutter and reach new audiences,” said Chris McCumber, President of USA Network, on the pre-linear strategy.
The series premiere will also be simulcast on sister network NBC Universo with subtitles on June 24 at 10 PM/ 9 PM CT. Every subsequent episode will be made available with Spanish subtitles on VOD, and NBCUniversal owned and operated digital channels.
The network was successful with its windowing strategy for comedy Playing House, which got a second season renewal with VOD as its primary window. It will continue with that structure in Season 2 allowing viewers to watch the following week’s episode via digital and On Demand platforms before it airs on USA. The network also will premiere a double stack of new one-hour episodes for the premiere of summer drama Complications on June 18 at 9/8c, with the third episode immediately available to viewers via VOD that evening.
Mr. Robot, from Universal Cable Prods., stars Rami Malek as Elliot, a young programmer who works as a cyber-security engineer by day and as a vigilante hacker by night. Sam Esmail is writer/executive producer. Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Chad Hamilton also exec produce.
