Universal Hires Telemundo Film Music Exec; Starz Acquires ‘Tumbledown’ – Film Briefs

Tanya Greig Perara has joined Universal Pictures as SVP Business Affairs, Film Music. She will spearhead the business affairs for anything involving film music, including talent deals, licensing negotiations, oversight over current and past soundtrack projects, partnering with record labels, and Universal’s in-house Back Lot Music label. She will work with Mike Knobloch, President of Film Music and Publishing. The move comes during a rocking time for the unit, which has seen big successes of late with the soundtracks for Furious 7, Fifty Shades Of Grey and Pitch Perfect 2. Perara was VP Business & Legal Affairs at Telemundo Media and before that spent 13 years at Interscope Geffen A&M Records, rising to SVP of Emerging Business and Revenue.

Starz has acquired U.S distribution rights to the romantic comedy Tumbledown starring Rebecca Hall and Jason Sudeikis for a Valentine’s Day 2016 bow. The feature, which marks the directorial debut of Sean Mewshaw, follows a recent widow (Hall) struggling to move on and a brash New York writer (Sudeikis) who forces her to confront her loss. The plan is to release the pic in theaters nationwide followed by a VOD release and then an exclusive pay-TV premiere later on Starz. Desi Van Til, who wrote the script, is executive producer with Jason Cloth. Kristin Hahn of Hahnscape Entertainment, Bron Studios’ Aaron L. Gilbert and Margot Hand are producers. CAA repped the filmmakers in the deal.

Paramount Home Media Distribution has signed an output deal with IFC Films, giving it home entertainment rights to select theatrical releases including the Jack Black-James Marsden movie The D Train; Clouds Of Sils Maria, the pic that won Kristen Stewart a Cesar Award; and Good Kill with Ethan Hawke; and the Sudeikis-Alison Brie pic Sleeping With Other People. Paramount and IFC Films partnered on the home vid release of Boyhood; this deal will see PHMD handle physical and Internet digital home entertainment distribution in the U.S., while IFC Films will handle VOD and EST sales to cable, satellite and telco.
