‘Twilight’s’ Catherine Hardwicke to Direct YA Novel Adaptation ‘Stargirl’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Catherine Hardwicke is on board to direct an adaptation of the bestselling YA novel “Stargirl.”

Kristin Hahn will adapt Jerry Spinelli’s book and produce the film, along with Gotham Group, Hahnscape Entertainment and BCDF Productions. BCDF is financing the movie with plans for a fall production start date.

Hardwicke was quick to sign on for the project after reading Hahn’s script, sources tell Variety.

First published in 2000 by Random House, the critically acclaimed story follows a homeschooled teen who enrolls in an Arizona high school, altering the ecosystem of the student body with her nonconformity.

“This is one of those stories and characters that stir your imagination and steal your heart and just stick with you forever. I am thrilled to have the chance to adapt this beloved novel and I can’t imagine anyone more uniquely equipped to bring this story to life than Catherine Hardwicke, a Stargirl in her own right”

CAA will handle domestic sales while Red Granite handles international ones.

Hardwicke just wrapped production on Lionsgate’s Drew Barrymore romantic comedy “Miss You Already.” She directed one of the biggest YA novel adaptations of all, “Twilight,” in 2008.

Hahn has been producing for many years, she helped Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt with the founding of Plan B Entertainment most recently produced “Tumbledown” and “Cake”. “Stargirl” sees Hahn going back to her writing roots, having previously written the books “In Search of Grace” (Harper Collins) and Anthem: An American Road Story (HarperCollins) which was the companion book for her documentary of the same name.

Hardwicke and Hahn are both represented by CAA. Spinelli is repped by Hogan Lovells.
