TV Academy Creates Reality Peer Group

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Board of Governors voted Thursday to create the Reality Peer Group, for academy members working on reality programming for national exhibition. It is the first time such a peer group had been created.

The board also voted to rename the Nonfiction Peer Group as the Documentary Peer Group, which will include academy members engaged in documentary programming meant for entertainment or informational purposes for national exhibition, rather than produced for news organizations.

Previously, both reality and documentary television professionals made up the Nonfiction Peer Group. The changes were made to recognize the growth of the reality genre and to differentiate between the work done by documentary and reality television professionals, the academy said in a statement.

The move brings the total number of academy peer groups to 29, with each group representing a different aspect of the industry from art direction to children's programming.
