Tom Cruise: I’ll Make Top Gun 2 On One Condition

Tom Cruise is clearly a man after our own hearts.

The ‘Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation’ star has taken our breath away by revealing he’s ready to return to the role of ace fighter pilot Maverick for ‘Top Gun 2′ on one condition… that the airplane stunts are performed for real without the use of CGI.

“If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it’d be fun to do.” Cruise told Extra about the long-gestating sequel, “I’d like to fly those jets again, but we got to do all the jets practical, no CGI on the jets… I’m saying right now no CGI on the jets.

“If we can figure all that out, and the Department of Defense will allow us to do it, that would be fun.”

The original 1986 film was a star-making movie for Cruise so it’s no surprise that he’s keen to return to that world, and the latest rumours are that ‘Top Gun 2’ will explore the end of the fighter pilot era following the introduction of drone warfare.

However the 53-year-old star also expressed doubts about it ever happening.

“I have not thought about it [’Top Gun 2′], we haven’t turned our eye to it. Jerry [Bruckheimer - the producer] and I talked about it and I just don’t… I dunno.”

The first film was made with co-operation from the US Navy who advised on the script and provided real aircraft and an aircraft carrier to shoot several scenes.

However, renowned stunt pilot Art Scholl lost his life in a plane crash while shooting a stunt for the film, and the film is dedicated to his memory, so Cruise’s insistence on shooting the film without the aid of CGI could prove tricky in this super-cautious era.

Following the death of director Tony Scott in 2012, ‘Top Gun 2′ seemed an unlikely prospect, but the more they talk about it, the more likely it is to achieve lift off. Watch this space.
