Deadline revealed yesterday that Sony had offered the top domestic marketing job to Dwight Caines and the studio just made it official. Caines might well be the very first marketing head at a major studio to come from the digital marketing division. Here’s the release:

Sony Pictures Entertainment today announced that it has named Dwight Caines as President of Theatrical Marketing for the Columbia TriStar Motion Pictures Group. Caines will report to Jeff Blake, Vice Chairman, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Chairman, Worldwide Marketing and Distribution. Caines will continue to oversee worldwide digital marketing for the studio, working closely on theatrical marketing with Nigel Clark, President of Marketing for Sony Pictures Releasing International, who will now also report to Blake.

Caines has served as head of the studio’s global digital motion picture marketing since 2005, leading all strategic planning, creative and campaign development including website implementation, media placement, social media and integration of third party promotions.

“I am very pleased to welcome Dwight into this expanded role, where we can all benefit from his unique expertise,” said Blake. “As the media landscape has evolved, Dwight’s team has been at the forefront of the latest trends and technologies, keeping in step with new ways to reach movie fans.”

Caines has overseen the digital marketing of all films from Columbia Pictures, TriStar, Screen Gems and Revolution Studios. Over the past few years, he has worked on such world-renowned franchises as Spider-Man® and James Bond, including the record-setting release of the latest Bond film, Skyfall in 2012. Other recent successful digital marketing campaigns led by Caines include This is the End, Grown Ups 2, and Men in Black 3.

“I have had the privilege of marketing films from across our diverse family of labels in the digital world over the last nearly ten years so I am pleased to be taking on a larger role in marketing,” said Caines. “I am looking forward to working with everyone here at Sony Pictures as we continue to embrace innovations across all platforms.”

Caines joined Sony Pictures in 1997 as the director of market research. He was upped to executive director in 1998 and vice president in 1999. He was tapped to create the Digital Marketing Strategy department in 2000 and, subsequently, promoted to executive vice president in 2005 and president of worldwide digital marketing in 2008.

Caines got his start in new media in 1994 while working for Chase Manhattan Bank, launching and managing the company’s first call center dedicated to servicing PC Banking customers. He was instrumental in the development of their online banking business.

Caines is a graduate of Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications with a Bachelor of Science degree in electronic media production.
