TF1 Partners With UFA/Beta On ‘Hitler’ Event Series- Mipcom

French broadcaster TF1 is partnering with German production companies UFA and Beta for a ten hour, premium drama series Hitler. The series will be produced by the award-winning team behind hit German series Generation War. German channel RTL is co-developing the series, which is currently in pre-production, and is based on Thomas Weber’s biography Hitler’s First War. Niki Stein and Hark Bohm are writing the scripts with UFA’s Benajmin Benedict and Joachim Kosack producing.

Each episode with concentrate on one chapter of Hitler’s rise to power from the end of World War 1 through to the catastrophe of the end of World War 2 and the Holocaust. “Hitler is one of the most ambitious European TV projects to date and will change the way we see him today,” said Beta Film chief exec Jan Mojito.

“With Hitler, we strive to lift the traditional format ‘historical mini-series’ to a new level,” added UFA producers Benjamin Benedict and Joachim Kosack. “The early support of high-ranking channels such as TF1 and RTL has helped us in this audacious undertaking of courageously confronting the past.”

UFA Fiction produces in association with Beta Film and in development with RTL.

The calamitous reign of Hitler remains a big draw for European commissioners. Last week, FremantleMedia International announced it had acquired global distribution rights, excluding North America and the UK, from UK indie Arrow Media for their upcoming docu series Hitler: The Biography (working title). Chronicling Adolf Hitler from childhood to his downfall, the six-part series features newly unearthed archive materials, declassified documents, and new CGI techniques. That series was commissioned by the Discovery-owned American Heroes Channel, looking at how Germany’s Führer would go from being named Time magazine’s Man of the Year in 1938 to becoming one of history’s most reviled mass murderers.
