4th UPDATE, Monday, 12:33 PST: Sunday estimates for all films seemed to slide slightly or plateau over night with only a handful of exceptions, including the two big animated films in the international marketplace. Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out grabbed $2.5M more than anticipated while Universal’s latest in the franchise Minions gathered $1.9M more. Minions will get is North American debut next weekend. All final updates are in for newcomers Terminator Genisys and Magic Mike XXL as well as Universal’s box office great Jurassic World. Only awaiting word from Sony. All of the rest of the grosses have arrived.

Anita Busch reported on Monday’s finals.

3RD UPDATE, 3:15 PM PT: This weekend’s international frame across the Top 10 major U.S. studio releases was up about 3.8% versus last. Year-on-year, looking at just the Top 3 films this week versus the Top 3 in the similar 2014 frame, grosses are up around 14%. In both the current and 2014 frames, the Top 3 pics were studio movies. Paramount has this week’s No. 1 title with Terminator: Genisys at a lesser than anticipated $73.3M (down from $74M) while it similarly was the weekend winner last year at this time when Transformers: Age Of Extinction added $96.6M in its 2nd frame. Coming in at No. 2 this week, Minions added a better than expected $56.2M (up from $54.3M) while last year the No. 2 movie was also an animated affair with How To Train Your Dragon 2 swooping in on a $33.5M 4th frame. At No. 3 this go-round, Jurassic World chomped down on another $43.3M (up from $42M). Last year’s comparable session brought Maleficent’s entry into Japan which helped it score $19.4M and the 3rd place berth.

Among the offshore titles on the overall international chart, there’s a new entry from China (The Monk Comes Down The Mountain), a holdover in Korea (Northern Limit Line) and a new sequel in France (Les Profs 2). When factoring in those pictures, this session’s Top 10 is up about 5.5% compared to last week. See more on those and other local titles below the original post.

For the studios, next week is largely a holdover/expansion session internationally. Universal’s Minions will animate domestic box office as it bows there after a couple of weeks already playing overseas. It will add 25 more offshore markets, including France, Mexico and Russia next frame. Each of those figured in Despicable Me 2’s ultimate Top 10. The other big animated movie around the world, Inside Out will tug on emotions in Korea. Terminator: Genisys time travels to Germany, Italy, Spain and Japan (the latter the biggest market for the franchise’s last two pictures); Ted 2 will notably cuddle up to the UK; and Magic Mike XXL goes Down Under, and to Brazil and France among other new stages. With China still in an unofficial blackout period, next week sees the release there of Tiny Times 4, the latest film in the hit franchise.

Please note that Warner Bros reported its holdover figures (ie San Andreas, Entourage) today (Monday). The rest of the actuals are as follows.

PREVIOUS, SUNDAY AM PT: International weekend estimates have Terminator: Genisys taking the top spot at $73.3M (down from the estimated $74M) for the frame. The offshore expansion of Paramount’s latest in the franchise with 36 new territories brought the sci-fi actioner to 60% of its ultimate offshore footprint and gives it an overseas cume of $85.3M. T:G initially bowed to $8.4M in 10 smaller markets last weekend. So, all in, it is currently playing in 46 territories.

With the overall cume of 2009’s Terminator: Salvation lower than projections on Genisys, Paramount is using Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol as its main comp and says the weekend results were 7% above that film’s debut in the same markets. With respect to other comps, World War Z and Lucy, T:G were 8% below and 10% above, respectively.

New this session, Warner Bros’ Magic Mike XXL began its international strip-off, taking a less than expected $5.9M (down from $6.2M) in 15 markets during a European heatwave. In other expansions, Universal/Illumination’s Minions added key plays and nabbed an estimated $54.3M from 26 markets. The international total is now $124.2M in advance of the domestic release this week — and the film is already proving itself a force to be reckoned with overseas. Still rampaging, Universal’s dinosaurs thrashed into their 4th scene-chewing session with another $43.3M (up from its Sunday estimated $42M) in 66 territories for an international Jurassic World total of $826.9M. JW has now overtaken Avengers: Age Of Ultron as the 5th biggest worldwide grosser ever with $1.385B (Ultron for its part bowed very well in Japan this frame — see below). Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out added a much better than expected $21.1M (way up from $18.6M) in its 3rd session of international play. With several key markets to come, the offshore total thus far is $120M.

Below are market breakdowns on the above films along with Ted 2, San Andreas, Spy, Insidious: Chapter 3, Poltergeist, Mad Max: Fury Road and more. Update on local-language pics, too.

les profs 2
les profs 2

Les Profs 2, a sequel to the 2013 comedy, scored the 5th best opening day of 2015 this week when it bowed to about 312K admissions on Wednesday. That makes it the top starter of the year amongst local films. Kev Adams, Isabelle Nanty, Didier Bourdon and helmer Pierre-François Martin Laval star with a total $6.8M in the first weekend. The film benefited from the Fête du Cinéma which began last Sunday and for the first year ran through Wednesday to include new openers in the reduced ticket promotional event. Released by UGC, Les Profs 2 transplants a group of Gallic teachers to a UK boarding school — and for the moment appears to be critic-proof. UGC last year released mega-smash Qu’Est-Ce Qu’On A Fait Au Bon Dieu?! (aka Serial (Bad) Weddings — one of the most seriously curious English-language title translations I’ve come across in over 20 years in France). That film performed well in Europe but never made it to the U.S., nor did the first Les Profs. Its title translation? Serial Teachers
