Sundance Selects Takes North American Rights To Rock Docu ‘The Punk Singer’
Sundance Selects has acquired North American rights to The Punk Singer, the Sini Anderson-directed punk rock docu. The film covers the 20-year journey of outspoken feminist icon Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre. She rose to national attention as the voice of the riot grrrl movement, but when she stopped shouting, many wondered why. Tamra Davis, Gwen Bialic, Rachel Dengiz and Erin Owens are the producers. The film made its world premiere at the 2013 SXSW, and Sundance Selects plans a fall release.

“The Punk Singer is one of those great documentaries that makes you realize how much a single person can accomplish in a short span of time,” said Jonathan Sehring, President of Sundance Selects/IFC Films. “From her pioneering riot grrrl music as the frontwoman for Bikini Kill and Le Tigre to her role as a feminist activist for a new generation of women, Kathleen Hanna is a complex, fascinating human being who is beautifully captured in Sini Anderson’s The Punk Singer.” Jeff Deutchman made the deal for Sundance Selects/IFC Films with Cinetic Media and Linda Lichter repping the filmmakers.
