Star Wars 7’s Rey Is Nothing Like Princess Leia

During an interview with SciFiNow, the 23-year-old ‘Star Wars 7’ actress revealed that she’s nothing like the ‘Star Wars’ heroines who have come before.

““[Rey] begins the film alone,” she said. “She is a scavenger on Jakku, and she meets Finn and they go on this adventure. Would I compare her to Padmé and Leia? No, because they were born into privilege, and Rey certainly is not. And they have had a life before the film, but [this] really is the beginning of Rey’s story.”

At the moment, very little is known about Rey – even her surname remains shrouded in mystery. And that’s largely because her origin remains a secret even to herself. Abandoned as a child on the harsh desert planet of Jakku, the young ‘Star Wars’ heroine has been forced into a life of scavenging just to get by… and that’s really where her story begins.

But while she may come across as a bit of a lone wolf, that may not be the whole story…

“I like that she’s open to the people she comes across,” she continued. “She doesn’t purposefully go into an adventure; she’s drawn into it. She’s so open to things that are going on, even though there are doubts holding her back.”

“I like that for me as a normal girl from London, I can see myself in that,” she added. “You can be strong at times, and then totally vulnerable and think, ‘I can’t do this; this is not for me,’ and then be angry when things go wrong, and sad when things are sad. So I like that all of those things are represented in her.”

Will we find out more about Rey’s family? Will she prove to be more like Princess Leia than she thinks? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 17 December 2015.
