Spider-Man ‘Belongs’ in Marvel Universe, Says Kevin Feige
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said that Spider-Man serves a “great purpose” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during a Q&A panel to promote “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and its Blu-ray release.
“I think Spider-Man can serve great purpose in our universe and that’s where he belongs,” said Feige. “That was what was unique about him in the comics was not that he was the only superhero in the world; it’s that he was a totally different kind of superhero when compared against all the other ones in the Marvel universe at the time.”
Sony will partner up with Marvel to bring the studio’s flagship superhero, portrayed by Tom Holland, to the upcoming “Captain America: Civil War” next year. This Spidey appearance will introduce Holland to audiences before his standalone debut as the web-slinger in July, 2017.
Since the Marvel-Sony deal became official in February, Feige said that the standalone feature has become “job No. 1.”
“The most important thing is relaunching Spider-Man with his own standalone movie and a story line that fits into this universe,” he said. “The connectivity is great, but doesn’t drive the train.”
“Civil War” will see the Avengers pitted against one another. Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Anthony Mackie also star.
“Captain America: Civil War” bows in theaters on May 6, 2016.
