Sony Pictures Classics will release "Foxcatcher," Bennett Miller's upcoming film about a pair of wrestlers (Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo) and their relationship with an eccentric heir (Steve Carell).

Sony's Columbia Pictures was going to release the film, which Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures produced. Instead, the studio's specialty label will release the film as planned on Dec. 20.

SPC distributed Miller's "Capote," which earned Philip Seymour Hoffman a Best Actor Oscar.

"We always felt this story could be a great movie and we pursued the project the minute we heard Bennett wanted to make it," Sony Pictures Classics co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard said in a statement. "We are excited to partner with Megan Ellison and Annapurna, glad Bennett is back with us and 'Foxcatcher' has found its home at Sony Pictures Classics."

Miller's film is based on the true story of Mark and Dave Schultz, brothers and champion wrestlers. Dave's close friend John du Pont, an heir to the chemical fortune, murders him.

"I've been discussing 'Foxcatcher' with Michael and Tom since I began researching the story in 2005 and it's always been my hope and expectation that they would distribute the film," Miller said in a statement. "Their passion and understanding of what 'Foxcatcher' could be and their ability to market unique and complex films makes SPC the ideal home for me."
