Soccer Legend Bobby Moore Documentary Launches Kickstarter Campaign

Producers of a documentary about iconic soccer player Bobby Moore have launched a Kickstarter campaign to release the film next year to coincide with the 50th anniversary of England’s 1966 World Cup victory.

Moore was the captain of that team. He’s regarded as one of the best defenders of all time and was named to the World Team of the 20th Century in 1998.

The film, titled “Bo66y the Movie,” is produced by British sports journalist Matt Lorenzo and Bennett McGhee. Ron Scalpello, who’s attached to a “Fourth Protocol” remake, is directing.

The doc will tell the story of Moore’s life both on and off the field, including overcoming testicular cancer in 1964 and nearly going bankrupt due to failed business deals. He died of cancer in 1993 at the age of 51.

Lorenzo said that the 1966 victory led to Moore being at the center of the English social revolution. “It was as if the whole nation had emerged from the black and white days of the ’50s into the wide cinemascope technicolor celebration that was the ’60s,” he said.

The film includes interviews with family and friends, former teammates (Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters), current players (Wayne Rooney) and football coaches and managers (Roy Hodgson and Harry Redknapp).

“I was lucky enough to grow up with Bobby Moore — he and my late father, a football writer — were great friends,” Lorenzo told Variety. “Bobby was neglected in later life and never received the respect he deserved for all he had done for the game. I want to redress that balance, and the film is a way of doing that. He was never a natural athlete and succeeded through sheer hard work and application.”

The campaign has a goal of $154,305. Those who donate at least $7,715 will receive associate producer credits.
