Sienna Miller Has Been Cut From Johnny Depp's Black Mass

It looks like Sienna Miller has been left on the cutting room floor for Johnny Depp’s new gangster movie ‘Black Mass’.

The director of the movie, Scott Cooper, told the Boston Globe that the British actress had been 'fantastic’ in the role, playing the partner of Depp’s gang lord Whitey Bulger, but had to be cut.

“It came down to narrative choices,” said Cooper, who added that the scenes with Grieg and Bulger living as a fugitives were 'less dramatic’.

Miller herself had played down the role she played in the movie in interviews, describing it as a 'cameo’.

She told the Boston.com last year: “She was quite a character from south Boston.

“The accent was something I really focused on because playing someone from Southie, you don’t want to mess that up. Hopefully I’ve managed to pull that off.”

She added to the Globe: “Up until the day before I flew here, I couldn’t do it and it sounded stupid.

“And I was sort of religiously watching every film ever set in South Boston: ‘Good Will Hunting,’ ‘Gone Baby Gone,’ ‘The Town.’ Catherine had a thick accent, so I hope I do it justice.”

Sadly, it seems like all the hard work turned out to be for nothing.

Grieg is currently serving an eight-year sentence for helping Bulger evade capture for a period of 16 years.

A former dental hygienist, she was on the run with Bulger from 1995 to 2011, when the pair were arrested in Santa Monica.

Miller’s work has been considerably more celebrated in recent years.

She landed a role in the Oscar-nominated 'Foxcatcher’ in 2014, and the equally heavily nominated 'American Sniper’, opposite Bradley Cooper last year too.

She also sat on the jury of the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, alongside the likes of Joel and Ethan Coen and Jake Gyllenhall.

But she has found herself dropped from movies before, notably Ridley Scott’s 'Robin Hood’ in 2009, amid rumours that her slim physique would have highlighted the increased girth of her co-star Russell Crowe.

Black Mass, which also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Joel Edgerton, Juno Temple and Dakota Johnson, is due out in the UK on November 27.
