Sci-fi Adventure Movie ‘Robot Overlords’ Spawns TV Spin-off Series (EXCLUSIVE)
LONDON — Buccaneer Media, the London-based production company created by TV drama producer Tony Wood, has signed a deal to create a spinoff TV series based on the U.K. independent sci-fi adventure movie “Robot Overlords.”
The pact was signed with Piers Tempest and Jo Bamford’s Tempo Prods., which produced the movie. The agreement will see Buccaneer create a TV series set in a parallel universe to the movie, which features a group of survivors following the invasion of Earth by alien robots. Jon Wright, the movie’s director, announced the adaptation at a press conference at the MCM London Comic Con event on Friday.
“This series will really expand the canvas of the robot occupation, and we are aiming to make an explosive show that the U.K. will be very proud of. Stay in your homes!” said Tempest, producer of the “Robot Overlords” movie.
Wood has overseen both scripted and unscripted TV shows, such as chart-topping soap opera “Coronation Street,” non-scripted drama series “Desi Rascals,” and the hit live-action kids’ series for Nickelodeon “House of Anubis.” Buccaneer is a partnership with Canada’s Cineflix Media.
“I’m thrilled to be working with Piers Tempest and Jon Wright to reimagine ‘Robot Overlords’ for an international family TV audience,” Wood said. “‘Robot Overlords’ is a great British sci-fi brand in the tradition of classics such as ‘Quatermass’ and ‘Doctor Who’ — packed with special effects and rebellious excitement.”
The title and cast for the spinoff TV series have yet to be announced.
The “Robot Overlords” movie cast included Gillian Anderson, Ben Kingsley, Callan McAuliffe, James Tarpey and Ella Hunt. The movie was written by Wright and Mark Stay, with special effects by Nvizible. Signature Entertainment released it theatrically in the U.K. in March, and will make it available on Blu-ray, DVD and digital HD on Aug. 10.
