In what’s arguably the least expected news of the week, acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson has boarded the live-action ‘Pinocchio’ remake, with Robert Downey Jr. as his lead.

There have been many rumours over the months that, whilst contractually tied up with Marvel, Downey Jr. has continued to quietly work on a live-action version of the beloved tale.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that not only was the ‘Iron Man’ actor still making progress with the project, but that PTA (known for critically lauded films like ‘Boogie Nights’, ‘Magnolia’, and ‘There Will Be Blood’) will write the latest version of the script, with the hope of directing too.

The pair were scheduled to work alongside one another for ‘Inherent Vice’, but due to Downey Jr.’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ commitments it wasn’t possible.

Even though Michael Mitnick (’The Giver’) is responsible for the most recent draft, it’ll now be the responsibility of PTA to develop into a feature length screenplay suitable for filming.

After months of mumours, it was revealed Downey Jr. had continued to chip away at the project, and has supposedly been gradually editing it over the past six months. As well as playing the part of Geppetto, he’s also the producer, under his own company Team Downey, with partner Susan Downey and Dan Jinks.

‘Pinocchio’ follows in the footsteps of a number of animated-to-live-action adaptations, such as ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘Maleficent’, and ‘Cinderella’, as well as future releases that include ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘The Jungle Book’, and ‘The Little Mermaid’.
