Prison Drama ‘Starred Up’ Leads British Independent Film Award Nominations

The prison drama “Starred Up” led all films in nominations for the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), which were announced on Monday in London.

“Starred Up” (photo at top) received eight nominations, while Clio Barnard’s grim “The Selfish Giant” received seven. “Filth,” “Metro Manila” and “Le Week-end” received five each.

The awards are the British version of the Film Independent Spirit Awards, honoring films produced by British companies with a total budget of less than $20 million.

The nominations were long on films that have had limited distribution in North America or have been seen mostly in film festivals, including David Mackenzie’s “Starred Up,” Clio Barnard’s grim “The Selfish Giant,” Jon Baird’s “Filth,” Sean Ellis’ “Metro Manila” and Hanif Kureishi’s “Le Week-end.”

The only American films to figure into the nominations were Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine” and Noah Baumbach’s “Frances Ha,” which were nominated in the Best International Independent Film category along with “Blue Is the Warmest Color,” “The Great Beauty” and “Wadjda.”

While films like “The King’s Speech” and “Slumdog Millionaire” have won both the BIFAs and the Oscars in the past, this year’s BIFA nominations are short on films that figure into the Oscar race. “Philomena” received four nominations, including one for Best Actress Judi Dench, while Ralph Fiennes’ “The Invisible Woman” received two, including one for lead actress Felicity Jones.

The nominations are the second European nominations in the last three days at which the most-nominated film has been acquired for U.S. distribution by Tribeca Film. The company recently picked up distribution on “Starred Up,” and is also distributing the Belgian film “The Broken Circle Breakdown,” which led in nominations for the European Film Awards on Saturday.
