Who Plays Video Games? More Girls Than You May Think

Girls are playing more video games than ever, according to the Entertainment Software Association.

Around 45% of all gamers are women, according to recent findings by the trade organization. Of those, 31% are over the age of 18.

In its study, based on 2012 data, the ESA also found:

■ 58% of Americans play video games.

■ The average game player is 30 years old and has been playing games for 13 years.

■ The average age of the most frequent game purchaser is 35 years old.

■ 51% of U.S. households own a video game console like Sony’s PlayStation 3, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 or Nintendo’s Wii U. Most own two.

■ Gamers spent nearly $21 billion on games, hardware and accessories in 2012.

■ 36% of gamers play on their smartphone, while 25% play games on their wireless devices.

■ 91% of games in 2012 were rated “E” for Everyone or “T” for Teen by the Entertainment Software Rating Board.
