Picture Tree Picks Up ‘Mary Queen of Scots,’ ‘Metalhead’
LONDON — Berlin-based sales and production company Picture Tree Intl., which launched at the Berlin Film Festival, has added “Mary Queen of Scots” and “Metalhead” to its line-up at the Toronto Film Festival.
“Mary Queen of Scots,” a psychological drama helmed by Swiss director Thomas Imbach, will make its North American preem in Toronto’s Special Presentations section. French actress Camille Rutherford plays Maria Stuart in the film, which world preemed in competition in Locarno.
Toronto fest topper Piers Handling praised “the absolute ‘rightness’ of everything in this film” and called it “amongst the most thrilling treatments of a historical subject I have ever seen.”
Imbach wrote the screenplay, which is based on Stefan Zweig’s “Maria Stuart,” together with Andrea Staka and Eduard Habsburg-Lothringen, a descendant of Maria Stuart. Cinematographer is Rainer Klausmann (“Downfall”).
Pic is produced by Okofilm Prods., Swiss pubcaster SRF and Franco-German web Arte. Pathe Films will distrib the pic in Switzerland.
“Metalhead,” which is helmed by Icelandic director Ragnar Bragason, tells the story of a griefstricken girl who immerses herself in the world of heavy metal music after experiencing a family tragedy. It will world premiere in Toronto’s Contemporary World Cinema section.
Also on the Picture Tree slate are thriller “Human,” a co-production with Finland’s Blind Spot Pictures and Canada’s Perfect Circle Productions, and “Victor ‘Young’ Perez,” a French-Israeli-Bulgarian co-production that tells the true story of Victor Perez, a Jewish-Tunisian boxer during World War II. The film will be distributed in France by Ocean Films.
Picture Tree is headed by Andreas Rothbauer and Alec Schulmann.
