Peter Jackson Teases Directing ‘Doctor Who’
Did Peter Jackson just announce that he’s directing an episode of “Doctor Who”?
The “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” helmer posted a video on his verified Facebook page Sunday night teasing an upcoming directing stint on the long-running BBC series. “The Doctor’s certainly come to the right place!” the show’s official Facebook account wrote in the comments section.
In the video, Jackson is polishing one of his four Oscars when his daughter, Katie, asks why he hasn’t responded to “Doctor Who” and “Sherlock” showrunner Steven Moffat’s numerous emails.
“He’s always emailing me,” Jackson says in reference to an interview Moffat gave earlier this month. “He’s a genuine big old ‘Doctor Who’ fan. He’s mentioned [directing an episode], and then we email him and he doesn’t reply,” Moffat said.
“I think his plan is we all go to New Zealand and spend six months making it and our plan is he comes to Cardiff and makes it in 12 days,” Moffat also joked in November, which the video alludes to as well.
The Doctor himself suddenly appears out of nowhere to hand-deliver what is presumably a contract from the BBC for Jackson to sign.
“Who are you exactly?” Jackson asks before warning his daughter about “Doctor Who” fans, who are “a little more intense than Tolkien fans.” “I’m the Doctor,” Peter Capaldi responds in character. “Who?” Jackson asks. “Correct,” Capaldi answers.
However, the Doctor runs away (from a deadly Dalek) before Jackson signs the contract … just in time for Jackson and his daughter to watch “The Walking Dead.”
Another Easter egg is a bookmarked hardcover copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Silmarillion,” which fans have long wanted Jackson to adapt.
