Peter Heller Novel ‘The Painter’ Lands With ‘Fighter’ Scribe Paul Tamasy, ‘Blackfish’ Helmer Gabriela Cowperthwaite

EXCLUSIVE: Peter Heller’s novel The Painter is packaging up with The Fighter scribe Paul Tamasy writing the script and Gabriela Cowperthwaite directing. She made a splash with the award-winning docu Blackfish. Tamasy will produce. The Painter focuses on a famous artist with a blinding temper who returns to a quiet life after serving time for shooting a man in a Sante Fe bar. That is until he sees a hunting guide beating a small horse, and the artist soon finds himself on the lam, suspected of murder. Heller’s first book, The Dog Stars, is being turned into a film by Constantin Entertainment.

Tamasy sold Boston Strong to Fox, and his most recent project, The Finest Hours starring Chris Pine, is being released by Disney in January. Cowperthwaite’s Blackfish, released by CNN and Magnolia, has cast a shadow over SeaWorld and its star attractions. Cowperthwaite is represented by Verve and Black Box Management. Tamasy is represented by CAA and Gotham Group.
