Paul Haggis On Sweating Awards Season: “It’s So Childish”
We all hate being judged — or, at least I do — but most of us don’t have that as a months-long requirement. If you’re a filmmaker though, that’s half your year. Double Oscar winner Paul Haggis (Crash) has some experience with that, and in an exclusive clip from this week’s episode of Colaborator’s ongoing Gatekeepers series, he spills on the awards-season rat race and (politely) poxes the whole thing.
Calling the trophy-show crush “childish,” Haggis makes it clear he’s glad for his Academy Awards but insists that the whole thing is overblown. “People get so hung up on what was the best and what should have won,” he says. “Come on, you think in any way your film wasn’t great because [you didn’t win an Oscar]? It’s kind of childish, it really is. You have to be really happy with the work, and you have to be proud of it, whether it gets attention or doesn’t get attention.”
