‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’ Scares Up $1.2 Million in Late Night Shows

Paramount’s “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” materialized with a respectable $1.2 million in the U.S. in its first late night shows Thursday at about 1,600 locations.

Initial estimates range for the opening weekend range from $15 million to $20 million.

Paramount’s “The Devil Inside” grossed $2 million in its late night shows and went on to gross $38 million in the first weekend of 2012.

Cold weather in the East impacted many theaters, most notably in Boston and New York, according to Paramount.

The fifth edition of Paramount’s “Paranormal Activity” series will be competing against Warner Bros.’  “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” which has won the past three weekends, and Disney’s sixth weekend of “Frozen.”

“Smaug” grossed $4.1 million on Thursday in the U.S. for a three-week total of $213.3 million. “Frozen” is nearing a $275 million domestic cume.

“The Marked Ones,” an offshoot of the franchise with new characters, has a budget of $5 million and is produced by low-budget specialists Jason Blum and Oren Peli with Christopher Landon writing and directing.

Revolving around two Hispanic teenagers from Oxnard, Calif. (Andrew Jacobs and Jorge Diaz) “The Marked Ones” is aimed to appeal to the Hispanic demo, the most frequent U.S. moviegoers. The story explores the effects ‎of demonic possession and the cultural history of black magic rituals.

It’s the first time that a “Paranormal Activity” film has ventured outside an October release. The “Paranormal Activity” films have grossed more than $700 million worldwide with “Paranormal Activity 4″ taking in the smallest total at $142 million worldwide.
