NY Times Names New Culture, Arts & Leisure Editors

There's a changing of the guard at the New York Times' arts and culture section. Danielle Mattoon has been named the paper's culture editor, and Sia Michel will serve as the new editor for its Arts & Leisure section, Executive Editor Jill Abramson announced in a memo to staff on Friday.

Mattoon is migrating from the travel section but previously served as the deputy editor of Arts & Leisure and worked on the culture desk. She will replace Jonathan Landman, who took a buyout earlier this year.

"Danielle sent Dwight Garner seaward on the Queen Mary 2; Alessandra Stanley on a mother-daughter spring break trip to Florida; Frank Bruni to chase history in Ireland; Chip McGrath to England and the Netherlands on the track of our founding forefathers; and Charles Isherwood to Switzerland simply because what could be more delicious?" Abramson wrote to staff. "('I've never really seen the point of Switzerland,' Charles wrote.) Along the way, she built an impressive roster of outside voices as contributors as well, including Paul Theroux, A.A. Gill and Pico Ayer. But Danielle's heart is in Culture. And with a well-loved past in the department as the deputy editor of Arts & Leisure, she is no stranger to the desk."

Michel is being bumped up from her current post as deputy editor of Arts & Leisure. She joined the Times in 2007 after serving as editor-in-chief at Spin Magazine.

Michel succeeds Scott Veale, who Abramson said will take a new, currently unspecified editing role.
