Netflix Adds HD and AirPlay Streaming Support to Apple iOS Apps
The updated iOS app, published Thursday, supports Apple’s iOS 7 operating system, which includes AirPlay streaming directly to an Apple TV from the cloud (so you can use the Netflix app to play titles on the set-top). Previously, AirPlay required streaming video from an iPhone or iPad over Wi-Fi to an Apple TV.
In July, Netflix released an update to its Android app that delivers 1080p HD video for select titles, compatible with Google’s new next-gen Nexus 7 tablet with a higher-resolution screen. At the time, the company said it didn’t have a timetable for HD support on Apple mobile devices.
Separately, last week Netflix changed its policy for delivering higher-quality “Super HD” video, which the company says is comparable to Blu-ray, to all members instead of only those whose broadband providers are part of its content-delivery network. Super HD format is available on most devices that support 1080p playback.
