Neil Patrick Harris Heads to Broadway in ‘Hedwig’
Hot on the heels of his fourth well-received stint as Tony host, Neil Patrick Harris has locked in a Broadway return with a spring 2014 production of John Cameron Mitchell and Steven Trask’s rock tuner “Hedwig and Angry Inch.”
Harris has appeared on the Rialto before, but “Hedwig” will be his first Main Stem gig since returning to TV prominence in ”How I Met Your Mother” and becoming one of Hollywood’s go-to guys for emceeing industry awards shows. He was last on Broadway in the 2004 revival of “Assassins,” and also appeared in “Cabaret” and “Proof.”
Casting is an attention-getter for legiters, among whom Harris has cultivated a large amount of goodwill through his repeat Tony appearances as well as his consistent commitment to stage work. In recent years he directed “Rent” at the Hollywood Bowl in 2010, starred in the New York Philharmonic’s 2011 presentation of “Company” and helmed play “Nothing to Hide” at the Geffen Playhouse in 2012.
Harris will play the title role in “Hedwig,” which follows a rock band fronted by a transgender singer. Part was originated by Mitchell, who wrote the book for the tuner and starred in its 1998 Off Broadway bow; he also directed and starred in the 2001 film adaptation.
“Hedwig” is produced on Broadway by David Binder, who’s been working on getting the show on the Main Stem for a number of years now, and Jayne Baron Sherman, with 101 Prods. on board as exec producers.
“Hedwig” is set to open in spring 2014, with exact dates, theater and details of the creative team still to be announced.
