NBC Holding Open Casting Call For Dorothy In ‘The Wiz Live!’

NBC is holding an open casting call for the lead role of Dorothy in the network’s upcoming holiday special The Wiz Live!, which airs December 3. The call is set for June 6 from 10 AM-2 PM at Telsey + Co in Manhattan. Sign-in begins at 9 AM.

Here’s the description of the ideal candidate from NBC: “Casting directors will be looking for a young African-American woman between 18-27 years old. She must have an extraordinary voice that can tell a story, as well as be mature with a youthful energy. Candidates need to be prepared to sing the songs “Home,” “Ease on Down the Road” and “Be a Lion” from the original Broadway production of The Wiz.

The Wiz Live!’s Dorothy will join recently cast Stephanie Mills (see photo above), who played the original Dorothy in the multi-Tony-winning production that opened on Broadway in 1975. Mills will play Auntie Em in the NBC special.

The Wiz Live! is adapted from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, with a book by William F. Brown and music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are exec producing The Wiz Live! Kenny Leon will direct with Harvey Fierstein providing new written material. Universal Television is producing in association with Cirque Du Soleil Theatrical.
